Shaykh Nizam Yaquby   
Shaykh Nizam Yaquby has contributed important original research on many aspects of modern Islamic finance, participated in many Islamic, Da'wah and Fiqh international meetings and is considered one of the world’s leading experts in the field. He is a member of the Shari’ah supervisory boards for several Islamic financial institutions, including ADNIF & ISD NBAD, Citi Islamic Investment Bank, Hilal Bank, Ahli United Bank (UK) PLC London and the Abu Dhabi Islamic Bank.

Since 1976, he has taught tafsir, hadith and fiqh in Bahrain. He is also the author of several articles and publications on Islamic finance and other sciences in English and Arabic. Shaykh Yaquby received his M.Sc. in Finance fr om McGill University in Montreal and preparing for his PhD in University of Wales (Islamic Law). He was educated in the classical Shari’ah sciences in his native Bahrain and in Makkah.

 
Neil D. Miller - Partner, Global Head of Islamic finance
Neil is a banking partner based in Dubai. He has been active in the Middle East for more than 15 years having spent 4 years running our office in Bahrain before returning to London in 2000 to establish the Islamic finance group at Norton Rose LLP. Neil now coordinates the Group’s activities globally in the Islamic finance sector.

His practice focuses on all types of Islamic financial products covering a wide range of asset types, investment classes and industrial sectors. With a background in aircraft and shipping finance he advises on Shariah compliant big-ticket asset financing; real estate and project financings; a variety of structured Islamic products, helping clients create Shariah compliant instruments for asset and wealth management purposes and hedging and risk management solutions. He also advises on the structuring of Islamically acceptable investment funds, techniques for corporate transactions and related acquisition financing. He advises on Shariah governance issues and is particularly interested in how best to manage the interface between the requirements of Shariah compliance, governing law and the need for certainty in cross border Islamic financial transactions.

Over this period he has advised a wide range of Middle East and European financial institutions offering Islamic financial solutions. He knows and has worked closely with many of the internationally renowned Shariah scholars and is a regular speaker at conferences and seminars on Islamic finance topics.

 
Karl Rogers - Partner Norton Rose (Middle East) LLP
Karl is the partner responsible for Structured Products, Derivatives and Debt Capital Markets for Norton Rose Group in the Middle East. He has been in the Middle East region for five years before which he headed legal teams for several investment banks in both Europe and the USA.

Karl has over fifteen years of experience of structured products and derivatives transactions relating to equity, debt, credit and other underlying asset classes. He also works extensively with Islamic structured products and bonds and is actively involved in the product development of Shari’ah compliant products.

Karl has also been part of several industry-wide working groups including that with respect to drafting the ISDA 2002 Equity Derivatives Definitions.

His client base includes: international investment banks, regional banking institutions, private equity funds and corporate entities.

 
Stella Cox - Managing Director, DD Cap
Stella Cox is a Director of DDCAP. Stella and her team are responsible for DDCAP’s Islamic and Middle Eastern clients and market activities. DDCAP’s wholly owned subsidiary, DD&Co, is a leading provider of asset facilitation services to the Islamic wholesale markets. Through DDGI, the Firm has also invested, for its own account, in a number of Islamic financial services initiatives and overseas representation.

Previously she was a Director of Dresdner Kleinwort Benson Limited (“KB”) where she had responsibility for Middle Eastern institutional relationships and product development for KB’s Islamic clients. Stella’s team managed assets aggregating over US$2bn and extended over US$250mn of finance to support the trade and commodity purchase requirements of their clients.

Whilst with the Bank, Stella was involved in structuring The Islamic Fund, the first Sharia’a compliant global equity product, launched in 1986. The Fund was subsequently distributed by Gulf Bank, Kuwait and National Bank of Bahrain.

Prior to leaving KB, Stella was a Director of the Al Meezan Commodity Fund plc, a joint venture initiative between KB and Islamic Investment Company of the Gulf (Bahrain) that invested in base metals traded on the London Metal Exchange.

She is a Fellow of the Institute of Islamic Banking and Insurance in the United Kingdom and has served on its Board of Governors within the Islamic Banking Group. Stella previously served as a member of the Working Group established by the Central Bank of Bahrain (formerly the Bahrain Monetary Authority) with the purpose of developing procedures and documentation for Islamic commodity trading. She has also assisted the DIFC Islamic Advisory Committee with its work on selected strategic development initiatives.

Stella represents DDCAP on the Market and Product Development Committee (MPDC) of the International Islamic Financial Market and has served as a member of the HM Treasury Islamic Finance Experts Group, serving also on the market Standardisation sub-group. Stella speaks regularly at international conferences and has contributed to many publications including Islamic Banker, Euromoney, Institutional Investor, Arab Banker and New Horizon. She was co-author of Structuring Islamic Finance Transactions published by Euromoney Books and in 2006 co-authored the Islamic Finance Qualification (IFQ) jointly offered by the UK Securities and Investment Institute and the Ecole Superieure des Affaires in Lebanon, contributing the Islamic Asset and Fund Management module.

 
Lawrence Oliver – Director – Deputy Chief Executive Officer, DD Cap
Lawrence Oliver is a Director and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of DDCAP Limited.

Lawrence is also a Director of Global Islamic Clearing Company, DDCAP’s wholly Sharia’a compliant brokerage and advisory joint venture based in Bahrain.

Lawrence joined DDCAP in April 1998. Previously he was an Assistant Manager at Dresdner Kleinwort Benson and a member of the team responsible for the Islamic Finance and Investment activity. Lawrence has extensive experience of arranging asset-based transactions that conform to Sharia’a stipulation.

Together with Stella Cox he has focused on re-establishing the traditional merchant trading business and capabilities of DD&Co Limited, for the benefit of Islamic institutional clients, and expanding DDGI’s Islamic financial sector initiatives.

He focuses specifically on Sharia’a compliant structured finance and asset origination.

 
Sayd Farook - Dar Al Istithmar
Sayd Farook is responsible for Structuring and Legal at Dar Al Istithmar. Prior to this, Sayd was the Research and Development Manager at the Center for Islamic Finance at the Bahrain Institute of Banking and Finance (BIBF). Sayd earned his Doctorate (Islamic Finance), Bachelors of Laws (LLB), Business (B.Bus) with First Class Honours from the University of Technology, Sydney and is a Certified Islamic Professional Accountant (CIPA). During his doctorate studies, Sayd was also a Finance and Accounting lecturer at a number of prominent universities in Australia. Prior to undertaking his doctorate, Sayd was employed by HSBC. Sayd’s papers are widely published in peer-reviewed journals, industry reports and media and as chapters in edited books, while he is also invited to present his research and views at a number of Islamic Finance events. Sayd serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Islamic Accounting and Business Research and is a Governance Standard consultant for the AAOIFI and delivers their CIPA qualification.
 
Ricky Thirion - Treasury, Etihad Airways
Ricky joined Etihad Airways in July of 2007 as Vice President - Treasury from South African Airways wh ere he held the role of Group Treasurer.

Ricky overseas the treasury, financial market risk management, investment, corporate and aircraft financing, and insurance activities at Etihad Airways.

Ricky holds a Masters Degree in Engineering and various financial and management related qualifications, and is a member of the Editorial Board of Journal of Corporate Treasury Management and a committee member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers – Middle East.

Prior to joining South African Airways, he headed up treasury and risk management services companies as Managing Director of Andisa Treasury Solutions, and as Managing Director of Standard Risk and Treasury Management Services, a subsidiary of the Standard Bank Group.

 
Chavan Bhogaita - National Bank of Abu Dhabi
Chavan Bhogaita joined NBAD in 2009 to work as part of our International Capital Markets team covering GCC credit markets (bonds and sukuk) across all sectors.

He has 10 years of experience in credit research. His prior roles include head of credit research at HSBC (Dubai), Head of Credit Research at Commerzbank (London), and senior credit analyst at Bear Stearns (London). Previously Mr. Bhogaita worked in the areas of corporate restructuring and insolvency, auditing, and corporate finance.

 
Abdul Aziz Abu Bakar - Senior Vice President, CIMB Investment Bank
Group Sales Group Funding – Islamic Treasury Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Abdul Aziz Abu Bakar is a Senior Vice President with CIMB Investment Bank, and is currently attached with Group Sales Group Funding – Islamic Treasury. Within Islamic Treasury, he serves as the Head of Foreign Currency Desk and is responsible for few business segments, specifically foreign exchange sales, foreign currency funding, derivative sales and structured product sales.

Previously, Abdul Aziz had worked with BlackRock in New York, USA, as management consultant to the financial institutions. There, he leveraged BlackRock’s expertise in capital markets, financial modeling and technology to assist with clients’ business requirements. Prior to dwelling in finance, he had ‘oil in his veins’ and worked with General Motors in Michigan, USA, as a Powertrain Project Engineer. He had worked on the design & development of the High Feature V6 engine programs, of which the 3.6L variant was on Ward’s 10 Best Engines in both 2008 & 2009.

Academic wise, Abdul Aziz graduated with Summa Cum Laude in Mechanical Engineering from Kettering University, Michigan, USA, in 2000. Additionally, he earned Masters in Software Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania, USA, in 2004. Then, he went to Harvard Business School in Massachusetts, USA, and graduated with a Masters in Business Administration in 2006.
 
Tariq Rahmat - Group Treasurer Qatar Islamic Bank
Over Thirty years experience in the treasury area at various financial centers. Having the experience of establishing the dealing room as well as that of Whole Sale bank in Bahrain . Worked with major local and international banks such as Riyad Bank, N C B, Societe General S A, BNP Paribas.

Managing the dealing room and Marketing of investment products, fixed income, Equity, and derivatives. Manage and measure the risk associated with the exposure for the bank , and making sure the bank is rewarded adequately for the risk taken.

Rushdi Siddiqui - Global Head of Islamic Finance
Rushdi Siddiqui is the Global Head of Islamic Finance and OIC Countries at Thomson Reuters (TR). In this role, Mr. Siddiqui works closely with Islamic finance and banking professionals, including Shariah scholars, fund managers, treasury, financial hubs, regulators, stock exchanges, central banks, Takafol (insurance) entities, Halal industry, and intra-OIC (57 Muslim countries), to further strengthen Thomson Reuters business. Recently, led the Islamic finance team at TR in the successful global launch of the Islamic Finance (IF) Gateway, the world’s first platform that addresses the work flow in IF across multiple asset classes.

Mr. Siddiqui joined Thomson Reuters from Dow Jones, wh ere he was global director for their Islamic Market Indices. Over his 10 years there, Mr. Siddiqui led the entry and expansion of the Dow Jones Indexes into Islamic finance, resulting in numerous awards from leading finance organizations and media outlets. Mr. Siddiqui has considerable experience in the financial markets, having worked at a Wall Street investment bank and commercial bank in the 1990s.

Mr. Siddiqui has authored a number of white papers and articles on Islamic indexes for publications including WIEF, ABANA Review, CPI Financial, the Chicago Journal of International Law, and Euromoney, and is a frequent speaker at industry events hosted by Harvard, Columbia Business School, London Business School, Oxford, the Economist, Islamic Development Bank, Malaysia’s MIFC, IIRME (Dubai), and more.

Mark Pritchard
Mark Pritchard is Head of Islamic Institutional and Corporate Coverage at National Bank of Abu Dhabi.   He is a specialist in establishing global relationships with the Islamic industry’s major participants.   Over a 23 year career, he has spent 17 years in the Middle East, previously as an interdealer broker of plain vanilla money market products in Bahrain, Kuwait and London.    He has an MBA in Islamic Products from Cardiff University
 
Ayman Khalife
Ayman Khalife is Head of the Structuring and Corporate Coverage team at the National Bank of Abu Dhabi. Over a 13 year career, he has worked internationally for ABN Amro NV and he also setup a derivatives desk at a regional bank. He has an MBA from the American University of Beirut in Lebanon, having completed a bachelor's degree in science at McGill University in Canada.
 
Yasser Shaath
Yasser Shaath is Head of Corporate Coverage at the National Bank of Abu Dhabi. His client focus is the Abu Dhabi government and semi-government institutes, as well as corporates. He has over 15 years' experience of treasury products, and he is a specialist in foreign exchange and money markets. Previously, he spent over 6 years in treasury operations.
 
Hein Van Der Wielen
Hein Van Der Wielen is a senior manager in the structuring and derivatives team at the National Bank of Abu Dhabi.    His main strength is translating financial market instruments into tailor-made client requirements.  Prior to joining the National Bank of Abu Dhabi, Hein was a rates and foreign exchange structurer at Standard Chartered Bank in Dubai.  In 2005, he started his career at ABN Amro Bank NV in the Netherlands as a foreign exchange derivatives structurer.   Hein has a Master of Science in Investment Theory, and he is a CFA charter holder.
 
Saeed Wajdi
Saeed Wajdi is Head of GCC Fixed Income at National Bank of Abu Dhabi.  Previously at HSBC, he held several senior positions over a successful nine year career spanning sales, regional training, branch and product management. He rose to be Associate Director Fixed Income Trading Middle East Markets, following a period as Manager, Corporate Risk Advisory.  A member of the Sheikh Mohammed Programme for Leadership Development, he was one of only three UAE nationals accredited in HSBC Bank’s Middle East talent pool.
